About Chisels and Gouges

A chisel is bevelled on one side, so the flat side guides a shaving cut; osteotomes, bevelled on both sides, are listed separately. Septum chisels such as Ballenger, Freer and Cottle work on the septum and nasal spine, some with depth marks or a T-shaped bar, and Sheen and Cakir chisels reach the radix. Gouges have a curved, trough-shaped blade that scoops bone, for example the Parkes hump gouge and the Killian septum gouge. Each listing gives the width and the shape of the edge.
