The sliding hinge is the feature that separates this crusher from a simple press. It lets the surgeon set how far the plates can close, so the compression is calibrated to the thickness of the graft in hand rather than applied blindly to the stop. Thin alar cartilage and a thick septal block need very different closing pressure; without an adjustable hinge the same squeeze either under-treats the thick graft or destroys the thin one.
The plates are interchangeable between a smooth face and longitudinal serrations. Smooth compresses the graft whole; serrated scores parallel lines into the surface, which lets the cartilage bend along those lines while its opposite face stays intact — the standard technique for persuading a straight graft to take a curve without cracking it. The 60 × 30 mm surface accommodates a full-length dorsal graft in one pass.
