The distinguishing feature of the Fomon pattern is that the curve runs along the entire blade, not just the last few millimetres. That full-length curvature lets the whole cutting edge stay in contact with a convex surface as the scissors close, so the cut follows the natural sweep of the lower lateral crus in one continuous pass instead of a series of short bites that leave a scalloped margin.
It also keeps the surgeon’s hand out of the sightline. Working around the lower lateral cartilage means approaching from below and in front, and a strongly curved blade lets the instrument enter at an angle while the tips remain visible at the cutting point — the reason this pattern is preferred over straighter scissors for tip reduction, where the amount removed cannot be judged if the tips are hidden.
