15 × 60 mm is a long, narrow working face, and that shape follows the material it was designed for. Septal cartilage is harvested as strips, and a crushing surface matched to the strip works its full length in one placement — a broad square plate would leave much of its face unused while the graft has to be repositioned to treat its whole length, and every repositioning risks an unevenly worked segment.
The surface is offered smooth or serrated, which sets what the instrument does rather than how hard it does it. Smooth compresses the cartilage as a whole to soften it while keeping the outer surface unbroken. Serrated bites into the face, breaking the structure more aggressively for grafts intended to bend sharply or to be reduced towards a morselised, conforming consistency. Both are used in rhinoplasty for reforming cartilage and bone before grafting.
