A solid tray and a mesh tray answer different needs. Mesh lets sterilising agent reach every surface, which is what a load of loose instruments requires. Solid walls keep contents enclosed — nothing falls through, nothing protrudes, and small items stay where they were placed through washing, transport and storage. For sets that travel between departments or are stacked in storage, containment is worth more than airflow.
It also protects what is inside from what is outside. A solid tray on a crowded shelf or a trolley shields its contents from contact with everything around it, where an open mesh tray does not. The instruments are still autoclaved successfully — the cycle is run with the tray arranged so steam can circulate — but the handling between cycles is where a closed tray earns its place.
