Nasal tip position is judged in millimetres and assessed from several angles, so the marking that records it has to be placed exactly. At 12 cm the whole instrument sits within the hand with no shaft projecting to act as a lever, which means the tip travels only as far as the fingertips do. For marking reference points on the tip and columella — an area a couple of centimetres across — that is the control the work needs.
The trade against the 14.5 cm version is reach and steadiness at distance. A shorter marker has to be brought close to the nose, so the hand sits near the field; the longer one keeps the hand further back with more of the face visible. Neither is better — they cover the close and the standing-back halves of the same marking step.
