This caliper exists for comparison rather than for absolute measurement. In mammaplasty the number that matters is rarely the one on the scale — it is whether the left matches the right. Sternal notch to nipple, nipple to fold, base width: each is taken on both sides and the difference between them is what the surgeon acts on.
Using one instrument for both sides is what makes that comparison valid. Two calipers, however well made, may read fractionally differently, and a difference of a millimetre between instruments is indistinguishable from a difference of a millimetre between breasts. Measuring both with the same jaws removes that ambiguity entirely — any difference in the reading is a difference in the patient.
