An angled blade exists to move the hand out of the way. Cutting cartilage on a flat working surface or within the nose with a straight knife puts the surgeon’s knuckles directly over the cut, hiding it at the moment precision is needed. Offsetting the blade from the handle axis keeps the line of sight to the cutting edge open while the wrist stays in a neutral, controllable position.
The blade guard addresses the rest of the instrument’s life. A cartilage knife is sharpened to a fine edge that dulls on contact with anything harder than tissue, and an unprotected blade in a tray is both a laceration risk during setup and count, and a blade that arrives at the next case blunter than it left. The guard covers the edge for handling, storage and transport.
