Oral surgery has an unusual retraction problem: everything in the field is mobile. The cheek collapses inward, the lip falls across the entry, the tongue moves on its own, and the flap being raised will not stay where it is put. The Minnesota’s broad contoured blade is shaped to handle all four, so the same instrument holds whichever structure is in the way at that moment rather than being swapped for each.
20.5 mm of width is what makes that possible. A narrow blade against a cheek simply indents it and the tissue folds around the edges; a broad one bears across enough surface to move the whole structure aside. Because the blade rests against mucosa for the length of a procedure, the polished finish and rounded profile do as much work as the width — buccal mucosa marks easily under a defined edge held at steady pressure.
