The Meyerding is one of the standard blade retractors in spinal and orthopaedic sets, and its usefulness lies in how the blade meets the wound. The working end turns at an angle and carries a lip that hooks over the tissue edge, so the retractor holds by shape rather than by continuous pull — the assistant maintains position, not force, which is what makes it bearable across a long case.
18 cm suits the depth of a posterior spinal or limb exposure: enough to reach the working plane while the hand stays above the wound edge, out of the light and clear of the instruments coming in from the other side. Polished German stainless spreads pressure along the blade’s contact area and releases cleanly when the retractor is repositioned, which happens repeatedly as the exposure develops.
