Detachable blades turn a retractor into a system. A shoulder exposure changes character as it proceeds — superficial and wide at the start, deep and narrow once the joint is reached — and a fixed-blade retractor that suits one stage is wrong for the next. Swapping blades on the same frame adapts the instrument to the stage without removing it from the wound and without three separate retractors on the tray.
It also means the blade can be matched to the patient rather than the average. Shoulder depth varies widely with build, and a blade too short slips out of a deep exposure while one too long presses on structures beyond the working area. Three pairs cover that range. At 23 cm the frame holds the mechanism and the surgeon’s hands clear of the joint itself, which is where the work is happening.
