Polished stainless is right against tissue and wrong under a surgical lamp. Theatre lights are intense and directional, and a mirror-finished handle held in the field reflects that beam straight back into the surgeon’s eyes — the glare is distracting at best and, in microsurgical work where the operator is staring at a small, brightly lit area for long stretches, genuinely tiring. Anodising the handle gives it a matt surface that scatters light instead of returning it.
The handle is also the part that can be finished this way without consequence. The blades stay bare stainless because they bear on tissue and need a surface that is smooth, non-porous and reprocesses cleanly. Two different ends give the surgeon a choice of retraction size within the same delicate range, so one instrument covers both without a change of hands in a field where every exchange costs time and attention.
