The condyle sits at the top of the mandibular ramus, articulating into the glenoid fossa of the skull base — a joint that is small, deep and surrounded by structures that cannot be displaced casually. Getting a retractor in there is less about strength than about geometry: the instrument has to reach past the ramus and hold soft tissue clear without pressing on the joint it is exposing.
19 cm gives the reach for that approach while keeping the handle outside a short incision, which is the usual constraint in this region — the exposure is kept small for anatomical reasons, so the instrument works through it rather than widening it. Being reusable stainless matters on a retractor held in position for the length of a joint procedure: the polished surface distributes pressure on tissue that is under continuous load.
