A flexible neck gives one instrument the geometry of many. Plastic and reconstructive work moves across contours — a jawline, a clavicle, the curve of a neck — and a fixed-angle retractor meets each of them at a different and often wrong angle. Bending the neck to suit the site means the rake sits flat against the tissue it is holding rather than digging in at one corner.
What makes it useful rather than merely adjustable is that it stays put. A neck that flexes under load would give way progressively as the assistant pulls, so the exposure would shrink through the procedure without anyone noticing until it mattered. This one holds its set shape rigidly against retraction force, so the position established at the start is the position at the end. At 16 cm the instrument suits the shallow, broad exposures rake retractors are used for.
