The Farabeuf is one of the oldest and simplest retractor patterns still in daily use, and it is supplied in twos for a practical reason: retracting one edge of a wound while the other falls inward achieves very little. A matched pair held on opposite sides opens the incision symmetrically, so the exposure is centred on what the surgeon is working on rather than pulled to one side.
Each retractor is double-ended with working ends of different sizes, which means a single pair covers more than one depth of wound. The bent, flattened blade hooks over a wound edge and holds it by shape rather than by grip, so it can be handed to an assistant and held for long periods without much force. That simplicity is why the pattern persists across general, orthopaedic and plastic sets rather than belonging to any one of them.
