Retracting a cheek is a different problem from retracting a wound edge. The cheek is not being held away from an incision — it is the wall of the space the surgeon needs to work in, and it collapses inward continuously under its own muscle tone. A cheek retractor holds that wall out for the whole procedure, converting a slit into a working cavity.
Because it bears on the inside of the cheek rather than on cut tissue, the finish matters more than the grip. Buccal mucosa is thin and held under steady pressure for a long time; a smooth, finely finished surface distributes that pressure and slides rather than dragging when the retractor is repositioned. The 6″ length places the handle outside the lips, so the surgeon’s access to the vestibule is not competing with the instrument creating it.
