A skin hook is held continuously, often by an assistant, for as long as a dissection takes — and fatigue in the hand holding it shows up directly in the field as drift and inconsistent tension. Aluminium is chosen over steel for the handle for that reason alone: the working tip needs the strength of steel, the handle only needs to be gripped, so making it from a lighter metal cuts the weight the hand supports without affecting how the hook performs.
The handle is sealed rather than open. An unsealed hollow handle takes in blood and fluid during use and is very difficult to clear afterwards — anything trapped inside is beyond the reach of cleaning and compromises reprocessing. Sealing removes that cavity entirely. At 15 cm this is a general-purpose length, suited to skin and soft tissue retraction across a wide range of procedures rather than to one speciality.
