Hooks at both ends double what one instrument covers. Skin retraction is needed constantly and briefly — lift an edge, hold it, release, move on — and having a second working end means the surgeon reorients by reversing the instrument rather than repositioning their whole hand. On an instrument picked up dozens of times in a case, that adds up.
At 5 mm the hooks are mid-sized: fine enough that the entry point closes without trace, substantial enough to hold a skin edge under real traction rather than pulling through it. That middle sizing is why the pattern is described as general purpose — it is not the finest hook for eyelid work nor the heaviest for scalp, but it handles the large span between them without changing instruments.
