The nasal cavity is a closed space entered through a small opening, and the surgeon’s own retractor blocks whatever overhead light might otherwise reach it. Fibre optics move the light source to the working end, so the illumination arrives where the blade is and travels with it — the part being dissected stays lit regardless of how the instrument is angled.
The concave blade is the second half. A flat blade holds tissue back but occupies the space it just created; curving it away from the field turns the blade into a wall rather than an obstruction, adding operative room instead of consuming it. The universal adaptor means the retractor connects to existing light sources rather than requiring a matched system, which is what makes a lit instrument practical to adopt one at a time.
