This is a general-purpose elevator rather than one shaped for a named procedure, and that is its usefulness. Most specialised elevators are optimised for one step — a right angle for the palate, a curve for the arch — and are awkward at anything else. A straight double-ended pattern in two modest widths handles dissection, elevation and bone scraping adequately across plastic, oral and maxillofacial work, which is what a set needs when it cannot carry a dedicated instrument for every stage.
3.0 mm and 4.0 mm are both narrow, keeping the instrument usable in confined intraoral and facial spaces where the wider periosteal elevators cannot be angled. The two sizes give a choice between starting a plane with the smaller edge, which concentrates force where the tissue is still fully attached, and continuing with the larger one, which spreads the load once the layer has begun to lift.
