The style numbering comes from watchmaking, where jewelers’ forceps were classified by point geometry long before surgeons adopted them. Style 1 is the baseline: a long even taper to a fine straight point, with no thickening behind it and no curve. That makes it the pattern reached for when the work simply needs a fine point and nothing else about the geometry matters.
Straight points go where the hand points, which is what suits graft placement and suturing in an open field. The flat handles are part of the same precision: a round handle rolls, and a few degrees of unintended rotation at the handle becomes a visible excursion at a point this fine. Flats register against the fingers so the orientation the surgeon set is the orientation that holds.
