Where the bayonet version of this pattern is built for depth, the straight version is built for directness. With no offset, the tips go exactly where the hand points and the instrument responds without the slight mental correction a bayonet always demands. In shallow microsurgical work, where the field is under a microscope but only millimetres below the surface, that directness is worth more than the clearance a bayonet buys.
Finely sharpened tips are what make the instrument useful at that scale. A rounded micro tip slides off wet tissue and cannot start a plane; sharp points engage on first contact. The ridged grip then supplies what the fingers need over a long case — microsurgical work is done with sustained light pressure rather than force, and a smooth grip slowly rotates in the fingers as concentration goes elsewhere.
