At 8.6 cm this is among the shortest forceps made, and the length is chosen against the anatomy. The orbit is only a few centimetres deep, so reach is irrelevant — what matters is that the whole instrument sits inside the hand. A short body is gripped entirely by the fingers, with no shaft projecting to act as a lever, so tremor is not amplified between the hand and the tip.
The two versions split the work cleanly. Micro-serrated jaws hold by friction across a face, which suits sutures, dressings and anything the surgeon must not perforate. Delicate 1×2 teeth interlock, which is the only way to hold conjunctiva or a tissue edge against real traction. Neither substitutes for the other, which is why the pattern is offered as a choice rather than a compromise between the two.
