This is a dissecting forceps rather than a tissue forceps, and the distinction shapes the design. A tissue forceps grasps, positions and releases; a dissecting forceps holds one structure steady for minutes at a time while the surgeon works around it with the other hand. Sustained holding is what punishes tissue — a grip that is harmless for two seconds leaves a mark after two minutes.
9×9 is the answer to that. Eighty-one contact points divide the holding force so finely that no single point reaches the pressure at which tissue blanches, however long it is held. The 15 cm length then keeps the surgeon’s hand out of the area being dissected — longer than the 12 cm Adson patterns, because the hand holding the retracted structure must not sit where the other hand is working.
