Below a certain scale, teeth stop helping. A tooth needs material to bite into, and the structures this forceps handles — a vessel adventitia, a nerve sheath, a graft edge — are thinner than the tooth would be deep. Plain sharp points hold by pressing two fine tips together on a tiny area instead, which grips a structure a toothed jaw would simply perforate.
Sharpness also decides what the instrument can pick up at all. A rounded micro tip slides off a smooth wet surface; a sharp one engages it immediately, which matters when the surgeon is working under magnification and cannot afford three attempts at the same grasp. The absence of serrations keeps the tips from catching on fine suture during tying — a plain point releases cleanly, a serrated one snags.
