The Lewis Septum Forceps carries an unusually wide jaw at 11.0 mm, grooved rather than serrated. The distinction matters: serrations are raised teeth that bite into soft tissue, while grooves are channels cut into a flat face. On bone — which teeth cannot penetrate — grooves work by mechanical interlock with surface irregularity and by increasing the effective friction of the contact face.
That makes this the instrument for the bony septum specifically, rather than the cartilaginous portion: removing bone spurs, taking perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, clearing vomerine ridges. The 11.0 mm width spreads gripping force so a bone fragment is held rather than crushed. The 10.1 cm shaft with 19 cm overall length suits endoscopic septal work.
