The Hartmann Nasal Cutting Forceps pairs two features that usually trade against each other. A through-cutting punch gives a clean divided margin; a rounded jaw profile reduces the risk of the instrument catching or lacerating tissue it merely brushes past on the way in. Sharp-cornered cutting jaws do the first well and the second badly.
Rounding the jaw exterior while keeping the punch edge internal resolves that: the cutting action happens only inside the closing jaw, and every external surface the instrument presents to the nasal mucosa is smooth. Several bite sizes are available to match the volume of tissue being removed.
