The Cottle–Walsham combines the Walsham straightening principle with the Cottle approach to septal surgery. Its 33.0 × 7.0 mm jaws are marginally longer than the standard Walsham, giving slightly more purchase along a deviation — useful where the deflection runs the length of the septum rather than sitting as a discrete spur.
The design priority throughout is visibility. At 22.9 cm the instrument occupies a nostril that also has to admit light and, often, an endoscope. A bulkier profile would deliver the same corrective force while blinding the surgeon to the result, so the shaft is kept deliberately slender at the cost of some rigidity.
